One of the challenges that many people face when they are divorced is how and where to obtain health insurance. There are many Health Plan carriers in Colorado. A list of the carriers provided by the State of Colorado can be found at this link. The list of small group health carriers in Colorado (including self employed) is at this link. Click here for a leaflet on more information about small group schemes. COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) gives workers (and their family members) who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by the plan under certain circumstances. In a divorce or legal separation situation, you can receive coverage for up to 36 months. You can be required to pay the entire premium for coverage up to 102% of the cost of the plan. For more general information on COBRA, click here. For specific information related to COBRA at your place of work, speak to your employer. Colorado also provides some support to fill the gaps left by COBRA. Click here for more info. CoverColorado is a not-for-profit entity created by the Colorado Legislature to provide medical insurance for eligible Colorado residents who, because of a pre-existing medical condition, are unable to get coverage from private insurers. It is also available to those who have applied to other insurers for coverage and are rejected or the rates are too high. Click for Application Requirements. Click to apply online, here for the application form and here for the application for a discount on the premium.
